COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Texas A&M saved its best soccer for the last afternoon of the year, pulling away from Ole Miss for a 5-1 win Sunday at Ellis Field in College Station, Texas, after a scoring burst that took just over seven minutes.

The Aggies trailed early. Katie Ramsden put the Rebels in front in the 21st minute with a free kick from just outside the penalty area, after a handball call against A&M near the edge of the box. A&M answered in the 39th minute, when Juliet Haras sent a free kick into the box and Finley Lacher redirected it into the bottom right corner to make it 1-1 at the break.

Everything broke open after the 72nd minute. Ireland Churchill weaved past several defenders and fired in the go-ahead goal, and 19 seconds later Ciara Jade Mitchell finished a counterattack after a give-and-go with Churchill. Leah Diaz added a fourth in the 77th minute off a layoff from Mitchell, and Churchill closed the scoring in the 79th minute by pouncing on a loose back pass.

Churchill, a freshman, finished with two goals and an assist. She became the first Aggie freshman to score more than once in three straight matches, and she ends the year with 13 goals and 30 points, tops on the team and fifth on the program’s freshman scoring list.

A&M outshot Ole Miss 22-9 overall and 6-5 on target, and won the corner count 3-1. The program honored seven seniors before the match.

The win left Texas A&M at 5-11-1 overall and 1-8-1 in Southeastern Conference play. Ole Miss finished 7-11-0 and 0-10-0 in the league, closing a fall that began with a 1-0 home win over Murray State on Aug. 12 in Oxford, Miss. First-year players accounted for 19 of the Aggies’ 32 goals this fall, a sign of where the rebuild in College Station starts next season.
