COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Northbound Highway 6 drivers will be pushed off the main lanes every night this week in College Station, as the Texas Department of Transportation sets work windows between 7:30 p.m. and 6:30 a.m. each night, Monday, Nov. 2, to Friday, Nov. 6.
The biggest change is a full overnight shutdown of the northbound main lanes from Harvey Mitchell Parkway to Harvey Road. Northbound traffic will be sent off at the Harvey Mitchell Parkway exit and can get back on just south of Harvey Road. The northbound entrance ramps near Harvey Mitchell Parkway and Southwest Parkway stay shut during those hours.
Southbound, the left lane will be blocked off for earthwork from Harvey Road down to Harvey Mitchell Parkway. On the northbound frontage road, the left lane from Harvey Road to University Drive will be closed, along with the University Drive exit ramp and the nearby entrance ramp. Frontage road traffic gets its main-lane access back below Briarcrest Drive.
Two more nights bring extra work. Tuesday night, barrier work takes away the inside northbound lane from University Drive up to Briarcrest Drive. On Thursday, drainage work closes the northbound frontage road right lane between Barron Road and Midtown Drive, plus the Rock Prairie Road exit ramp, so drivers should use the Barron Road exit instead.
The closures are part of the Big 6, the state widening of Highway 6 a corridor stretching 11.5 miles between the State Highway 21 junction in Bryan and William D. Fitch Parkway in College Station, and the plan takes the main lanes from two lanes each way to three and adds paths that cyclists and people on foot can share. The state picked Fluor Heavy Civil, LLC in March 2025 to build it under a contract worth $671 million.
TxDOT asks drivers to slow down in work zones, follow detour signs and leave extra time for late-night trips.
