COLLEGE STATION – The City Council of College Station met on Thursday night to discuss the feasibility of a new convention and multi-event center, following a presentation from the consulting group Hunden Partners, which has been working on the project’s feasibility study. This proposed venue aims to serve as a hub for tourism, conferences, and various community events, with an estimated cost of approximately half a billion dollars.
The proposed multi-event center is envisioned to enhance the city’s tourism and community engagement by providing a centralized location for events. Council members explored the optimal location for the center, emphasizing that it should ideally be near existing hotels and neighborhoods to promote walkability. Five potential sites have been identified: three along University Drive, one situated in Midtown, and another within the former Macy’s building at Post Oak Mall.
During the meeting, no vote was taken regarding the proposal; however, council members actively participated in discussions. Council member Bob Yancy expressed his support for the project, citing the necessity for such a facility due to the growing needs of the community. On the other hand, Councilmember William Wright expressed concerns, questioning the practicality of pursuing the project at this time. Despite varying opinions, most council members showed interest in the initiative but requested more detailed data before reaching a decision.
The City Council plans to revisit the feasibility study in around 30 days during a future workshop. This session will provide a platform for in-depth review and discussions surrounding the costs, benefits, and viability of the project. Additionally, if the project moves forward, future meetings will focus on critical aspects such as partnerships, site selection, financing, and governance structures.
As for funding prospects, possible options include utilizing hotel tax revenue, state-supported funding mechanisms, and legislative backing. The city’s leaders continue to assess how the convention center aligns with its future growth and development plans.
The feasibility study conducted by Hunden Partners has concluded that there is sufficient business demand to justify a connected hotel comprising between 275 to 400 rooms. This recommended hotel would be part of a larger complex that houses an exhibit hall, an event floor, two ballrooms, and multiple meeting rooms.
Previous arrangements with Texas A&M University, which allowed the city discounted access to meeting facilities, were noted as ineffective. Limited space resulted in the city losing over 60 events between 2022 and 2024, translating to an estimated $13.2 million in lost economic impact.
Earlier this year, the council authorized an expenditure of $40,000 for Hunden Partners to conduct the study and is now contemplating an additional $40,000 to gather further details specific to costs and funding options. The study has incorporated feedback from 20 stakeholder meetings, engaging various associations and event planners to ensure a comprehensive analysis.
In support of the project, the developer of College Station’s Midtown neighborhood has suggested participating in funding the hotel construction. Council members also discussed potential financial contributions from the nearby city of Bryan and local school districts to bolster the project’s funding.
As College Station continues to grow, the discussions around the convention multi-event center highlight the city’s ambition to create a vibrant space that caters to both residents and visitors while maximizing economic opportunities through tourism and events.
