College Station Man Sentenced to 20 Years in Prison
In a significant development arising from College Station, 35-year-old Cory James Middleton, was sentenced to 20 years in prison on a third-degree felony charge of Evading Detention in a motor vehicle. The verdict was passed by Judge Gary Chaney of the 506th District Court. Middleton’s criminal past played a significant role in the severity of his sentence.
An Extensive Criminal History Compounds Sentence
The sentencing of Middleton, who has an extensive criminal record, was part of a plea agreement with District Attorney Andria Bender. Notably, his punishment was enhanced due to his prior illicit activities. More charges against Middleton are still awaiting judgment in Brazos County.
The Crime That Led to The Sentencing
On the 16th of March 2023, Grimes County Sheriff’s Deputy Braden Copeland initiated a traffic stop on Highway 30 in the heart of Grimes County. The vehicle under Deputy Copeland’s surveillance was suspected of involvement in illegal activities. Middleton, the driver of the suspicious vehicle, was identified by Copeland.
After initial communication between Middleton and Copeland, the College Stations resident attempted to abscond from the scene, triggering a high-speed pursuit. The chase swerved from Highway 30 to FM 244 trailed towards Iola, reaching alarming speeds exceeding 100 mph. Middleton’s escape was thwarted when his vehicle crashed through a fence on County Road 103 close to Iola and was later found abandoned on County Road 109. Both Middleton and his accomplices had fled on foot.
Discovery of Methamphetamine Leads to Additional Charges
Investigations post the pursuit led to the retrieval of methamphetamine from Middleton’s abandoned truck. It was this discovery that led to additional charges being levied against Middleton, augmenting his already comprehensive list of felonies.
Iola’s Law Enforcement Stays Steadfast
The commitment of law enforcement agencies, notably the Grimes County Sheriff’s Office, contributed significantly to the resolution of this case. Their vigilant monitoring and immediate response prevented a potential escape and ensured that Middleton was held accountable for his actions.
College Station Community Breathes A Sigh of Relief
The residents of College Station can now feel a sense of relief with the sentencing of Middleton. Despite the manifold challenges, the authorities’ drive to uphold the law promises to strengthen the faith of the citizens in the system.
It’s a steadfast reminder that our community will continue to ensure the safety and security of its residents, and anyone who seeks to undermine that mission will face stringent consequences.
