College Station – A FedEx delivery in a College Station neighborhood escalated into violence last week, leading to assault charges against two men. The incident, which involved a physical confrontation and a handgun, unfolded early Friday afternoon near Lawyer Place and Shadowwood Drive, close to Southwest Parkway.
John Weldon Cabrera, 30, was delivering packages when a woman in another vehicle began honking at his FedEx truck, which was blocking part of the road. Witnesses observed the woman exit her vehicle to document the situation by taking photographs of Cabrera and the truck. While Cabrera initially had no issues with the photos of his vehicle, he became agitated upon realizing the woman was photographing him as well.
Cabrera demanded that the woman stop taking pictures and admitted to chasing her when she did not comply. Multiple eyewitness accounts report that Cabrera chased the woman, grabbed her from behind, and threw her to the ground. A bystander intervened, instructing Cabrera to leave the woman alone. Following the confrontation, Cabrera returned to his vehicle and departed the scene.
The woman reported sustaining injuries from the incident; however, Cabrera denied the allegations of assault, claiming his actions were limited to an attempt to grab her phone. The situation escalated after the woman’s husband, Kevin Brummet, 54, arrived at the scene. He blocked Cabrera’s FedEx vehicle with his pickup truck and approached Cabrera while armed with a handgun.
Witnesses reported that Brummet forcibly removed Cabrera from the FedEx vehicle by his hair and proceeded to punch and pistol-whip him. Cabrera was subsequently taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation before being transported to jail. He has since been released on a $4,000 bond and is facing charges of Assault Causing Bodily Injury.
Brummet, who is an employee with the Texas A&M Corps of Cadets, has been charged with Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon and has been released on a $10,000 bond. Texas A&M University has acknowledged awareness of Brummet’s arrest, noting that the incident took place off-campus and is unrelated to his employment. As a result, Brummet is currently under suspension while the investigation is ongoing.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding this violent confrontation. Officials have called for anyone with additional information to come forward, as the case has garnered significant attention within the community. The ongoing nature of the investigation leaves open the possibility for further developments regarding both Cabrera and Brummet’s legal situations.
This incident raises concerns about public safety and the handling of disputes in neighborhoods. It serves as a reminder of how quickly situations can escalate and the importance of seeking assistance or de-escalation strategies rather than resorting to violence.
As the investigation proceeds, community members are urged to remain vigilant and consider the implications of confrontations, especially in public spaces. The actions of both Cabrera and Brummet underline the potential dangers when disagreements arise, prompting discussions about conflict resolution in local neighborhoods.
