Texas A&M University-Commerce Rebrands as East Texas A&M University

COMMERCE, TEXAS — In a significant move this week, the Texas A&M University System’s Board of Regents voted to rename Texas A&M University-Commerce to East Texas A&M University. This decision was made during a regent meeting held on Thursday, marking a notable shift in the university’s identity.

Who Made the Change?

The change was approved by the Texas A&M University System’s Board of Regents, with Chair Bill Mahomes commenting on the necessity of improving the university’s visibility in the region. Chancellor John Sharp referred to the previous name as a “mistake,” emphasizing that it “always should have been ET (East Texas).”

What Is the New Name?

The university is now officially known as East Texas A&M University. This renaming brings the institution back to its roots; it initially opened as East Texas Normal College in 1889. Over the years, it had undergone several transformations, ultimately becoming Texas A&M University-Commerce in 1996.

Where Is the University Located?

East Texas A&M University is situated in Commerce, a city located northeast of Dallas. Its location has been strategically important for connecting with surrounding communities.

When Did the Vote Take Place?

The vote to change the name took place during a Board of Regents meeting on Thursday. This decision is effective immediately, although the transition to the new branding will take several months, involving changes to signs, logos, and other materials.

Why Was the Name Changed?

The name change is part of a broader strategy to enhance the university’s identity and broaden its outreach. According to Mahomes, the institution has experienced significant growth and success in recent years. “However,” he noted, “we must enhance our identity and outreach to continue building on this foundation.” University President Mark Rudin echoed these sentiments, stating that the change is set to “better reflect our heritage and mission while allowing us to connect more deeply with the communities we serve.”

The institution’s enrollment figures corroborate the growth that prompted the name change; as of 2023, East Texas A&M University has nearly 12,100 students enrolled.

Future Steps Following the Change

While the name change has been confirmed, the university will need to overhaul various aspects of its branding and outreach. These include altering the website, updating email addresses, and changing physical signage across the campus.

Community Reactions

Responses to the name change have been cautiously optimistic. Some community members and alumni had voiced concerns earlier this year when there was an unsuccessful proposal to rename the institution Texas A&M University-Dallas. The newly adopted name, East Texas A&M University, appears to resonate more with the university’s historical identity.

As the university moves forward with this change, it aims not only to enhance its presence in the immediate area but also to foster stronger connections with its surrounding communities. This name change is viewed as a significant step toward creating a more unified vision for the institution’s future.
