College Station, Texas – Students from International Leadership of Texas (ILT) College Station K-8 are set to make history by sending two payloads equipped with sensor chips into space later this year. The groundbreaking project includes a payload that will ascend to the upper atmosphere via a NASA high-altitude balloon, and a second payload destined for the International Space Station (ISS) aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket in October 2023.

The sensor chips will gather crucial environmental data during their journeys, equipped with an array of sensors that track parameters such as GPS location, acceleration, barometric pressure, and atmospheric gas levels. Upon their return to Earth, the data collected will be analyzed for scientific study, providing a unique opportunity for students to engage with real-world applications of science and technology.

The project has garnered attention from students and faculty alike. Seventh-grade students Ian Monsreal, Zoreen Maknojia, and Victoria Benedetti played key roles in the assembly of one of the sensor chips. Maknojia expressed her enthusiasm for the project, highlighting her longstanding interest in space exploration and technology.

The initiative is made possible through collaboration with educational institutions and organizations, including Max IQ, Princeton University, SpaceX, and NASA. The project began under a program known as Liftoff, which aims to prepare teachers for space-related educational projects. Amanda Krueger, the assistant principal at ILT, and teacher Ricky Waller wrote successful proposals securing a budget of $10,000 to fund the project, enabling participation from a gifted program comprising 26 seventh-grade students.

The students commenced the construction of the sensor chips in August 2023. Initially, they experienced challenges navigating the complex scientific vocabulary and concepts presented by professors and professionals in the field, prompting them to request more straightforward instructions. This led to the strengthening of their teamwork and problem-solving skills as they collaborated to overcome hurdles.

As part of their preparation, the students learned to code and tackle technical issues, including resolving Wi-Fi security problems that disrupted communication between the sensor chips. The balloon payload is scheduled for launch from New Mexico, after which it will land in Arizona and collect atmospheric data during its ascent.

The payload designated for the ISS will be vacuum-sealed and will be combined with projects from other educational institutions. It is expected to remain in orbit for approximately four to six weeks, providing a practical learning experience in space science.

Recognizing the importance of real-world challenges, students have noted the value of perseverance and teamwork throughout the development of their projects. Krueger remarked that the experience has empowered the students to realize their potential and tackle complex tasks with newfound confidence.

In addition to the scientific endeavors, the school administration has approved a field trip allowing students to attend the SpaceX launch in Florida in October. Fundraising activities to cover travel expenses will commence soon, ensuring that all participating students have the opportunity to witness their hard work culminate in a real launch.

Overall, this initiative represents a significant educational opportunity for the middle school students at ILT, enabling them to engage with advanced scientific concepts and participate in the exciting realm of space exploration. The project not only enhances their understanding of the science behind space missions, but also fosters a spirit of collaboration and innovation among young aspiring scientists.
