Liberty Flames team celebrating their NCAA softball victory

News Summary

The Liberty Flames triumphed over the Texas A&M Aggies in a thrilling NCAA softball tournament matchup, clinching their first-ever Super Regional berth. Liberty overcame a 3-1 deficit, scoring five runs in the sixth inning led by Rachel Roupe’s two home runs. Despite a late run from Texas A&M, Liberty’s pitcher Kaylan Yoder secured the win and the Flames finished their season with an impressive record, marking a significant achievement in their athletic history.

College Station, Texas – The Liberty Flames made history on May 19, 2025, by defeating the top-seeded Texas A&M Aggies 6-5 in the championship game of the Bryan-College Station Regional, securing their first-ever Super Regional berth in NCAA softball tournament history.

In a thrilling contest broadcasted nationally on ESPN2, Liberty rallied from a 3-1 deficit, scoring five runs in the sixth inning to take the lead and ultimately seal the victory. Rachel Roupe had an outstanding performance, hitting two home runs, including a pivotal three-run blast that hit the left field scoreboard, significantly contributing to Liberty’s success. Savannah Jessee also added to the drama with a two-run home run that helped tie the game at 3-3 before Liberty surged ahead.

Liberty quickly turned things around in the sixth inning after trailing, as KK Madrey walked to start the rally. Following two strikeouts, Jessee stepped up and hit her homer to even the score. JaMaya Byrum walked, and Savannah Woodard led off with a single, which set the stage for Roupe’s decisive three-run shot, giving Liberty a 6-3 advantage.

Although Texas A&M managed to score a run in the seventh inning, they couldn’t mount a successful comeback, leaving runners on base as Liberty’s pitcher Kaylan Yoder earned her first save of the season after taking over from starter Elena Escobar.

The loss marked a disappointing end to Texas A&M’s season, particularly following their earlier 14-11 win over Liberty in Game 6 of the regional, which forced a decisive Game 7. The Aggies had built a 3-0 lead after three innings in Game 7, bolstered by Allie Enright‘s solo home run. However, they could not sustain their momentum once Liberty found their rhythm.

In total, Roupe posted a remarkable performance on Sunday, going 4-for-9 with nine RBIs and three home runs across both games, highlighting her dominance and capability when it mattered the most for Liberty. The Flames finished their season with an impressive record of 50-13, solidifying their place in NCAA softball history.

This victory not only represents a landmark achievement for the Liberty Flames but also shatters previous records, as it is the first time a No. 1 seed has been eliminated in the opening weekend of regional play in NCAA softball. Liberty will now prepare to face either No. 13 seed Arizona or Mississippi in the upcoming super regionals, marking the next step in their historic tournament journey.

Liberty’s triumph over Texas A&M will be remembered not only for its significance in advancing to the Super Regionals but also for showcasing their resilience and talent on a grand stage.
