Liberty University Softball team celebrating their victory over Texas A&M

News Summary

In a remarkable victory, Liberty University’s softball team triumphed over top-ranked Texas A&M with a score of 6-5, marking the first time in the program’s history that they advance to the Super Regionals. The game was highlighted by standout performances, including two home runs by Rachel Roupe and a pivotal two-run homer from Savannah Jessee. Texas A&M’s elimination is historic, as they become the first No. 1 seed to fall in the regional round since 2005. Liberty looks to build on this success as they prepare for their next matchup.

College Station, Texas – In a stunning upset, Liberty University’s softball team defeated No. 1 Texas A&M 6-5 on Sunday night, winning the Bryan-College Station Regional and securing a spot in the Super Regionals for the first time in the program’s history. The victory allows Liberty, which improved its overall record to 50-13, to advance in the NCAA Division I softball tournament.

The game proved to be a thrilling encounter. Liberty relied heavily on the power of its players, with Rachel Roupe hitting two home runs and Savannah Jessee contributing a critical two-run homer. Jessee’s homer in the sixth inning tied the game at 3-3, following key plays that included a lead-off walk by KK Madrey and a single by Savannah Woodard. Roupe’s second home run, which soared off the left-field scoreboard, extended Liberty’s lead to 6-3. This scoring burst ultimately assured Liberty’s victory.

Texas A&M, the top-seeded team in the tournament, faced elimination as a result of the loss, which marks a historic moment in NCAA Division I softball. The Aggies are the first No. 1 overall seed to be eliminated in the regional round since the seeding system commenced in 2005. Texas A&M concluded the season with a record of 48-10 and has not made it to the Women’s College World Series since 2017.

During the game, Texas A&M initially took the lead with a two-run home run from KK Dement, establishing a 2-0 advantage. They extended their lead further when Amari Harper‘s two-out single brought home another run, putting the Aggies ahead 3-0 in the third inning. Despite the early momentum, Liberty rallied back to tie the game and eventually pull ahead.

The victory in this matchup followed a previous contest earlier on Sunday, where Liberty had defeated Texas A&M 8-5 in a tightly contested game that saw an incredible comeback effort from the Aggies earlier in the day. In that game, Liberty initially took a commanding 6-0 lead after hitting a grand slam in the second inning. However, Texas A&M responded with a relentless scoring run, bringing the score to 11-7 before Liberty tied the game with four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, setting the stage for Sunday’s decisive matchup.

Kaylan Yoder, who replaced starter Elena Escobar (with a record of 25-3 for the season), played a crucial role in securing Liberty’s victory. She struck out Kramer Eschete to end the game, earning her first save of the season. Despite the challenge from Texas A&M, which included Kennedy Powell‘s two-run single late in the game, Liberty maintained their composure to secure the win.

This year marks a significant turnaround for Liberty’s softball program, which was eliminated in the regional round last year after suffering a loss to Georgia. The team now prepares to host the winner of the matchup between No. 13 seed Arizona and Mississippi for the Super Regionals next weekend, as they look to build on this historic victory and continue their pursuit of a national championship.
