The game was highlighted by a sixth-inning comeback, including a pivotal two-run home run by Savannah Jessee and a three-run shot by Rachel Roupe. Texas A&M’s season ends with a 48-10 record, while Liberty advances with a 50-13 record, looking forward to their matchup against No. 16 seed Oregon.

Bryan-College Station, Texas – In a stunning upset that has rewritten the record books, Liberty University’s softball team defeated No. 1 seeded Texas A&M 6-5, eliminating the Aggies from the NCAA tournament. This historic win makes Texas A&M the first No. 1 national seed to be eliminated in the regional round of the tournament since the current seeding system was established in 2005.

The victory allowed Liberty to claim the championship of the Bryan-College Station Regional and advances them to the super regionals where they will face No. 16 seed Oregon. Liberty concluded their season with an impressive 50-13 record, marking a significant milestone for the program as they reach the super regionals for the first time in history.

The pivotal moment in the game came in the sixth inning when Liberty was trailing 3-1. The inning began with freshman KK Madrey drawing a leadoff walk, setting the stage for a remarkable comeback. Savannah Jessee then hit a critical two-run home run that tied the game at 3-3. The momentum continued as JaMaya Byrum walked, and Savannah Woodard added a single, paving the way for Rachel Roupe, who belted a home run off the scoreboard. This sequence propelled Liberty ahead 6-3, capturing the lead that they would ultimately not relinquish.

Texas A&M attempted to mount a comeback in the bottom of the seventh inning, with Koko Wooley scoring on an infield single to reduce the deficit to 6-5. However, Liberty’s relief pitcher Kaylan Yoder, who replaced starter Elena Escobar, struck out Kramer Eschete to secure the win, marking Yoder’s first save of the season.

The earlier match of the day saw Texas A&M take a decisive victory over Liberty, winning 14-11 after scoring ten unanswered runs. In that contest, Liberty initially jumped to a 6-0 lead, aided by a grand slam from Rachel Roupe. However, the Aggies rallied back, showcasing their depth and resilience throughout the game. Despite leading 11-7 late in the game, Texas A&M ultimately allowed Liberty to tie it, forcing extra innings where the Aggies prevailed.

During both games played on the same day, Texas A&M recorded 18 hits. However, their defensive struggles were evident, highlighted by six errors in the first game, which contributed significantly to their challenges against Liberty.

Texas A&M concluded their season with a 48-10 record following the loss, while Liberty’s victory marks a watershed moment for their program. The Flames, who have shown consistent growth in recent years, will now look to build on this historic win as they prepare for their upcoming matchup against Oregon in the super regionals.

This outstanding performance by Liberty not only secures their place in history but also adds excitement to the ongoing NCAA softball tournament as they continue their quest for national glory.
