Navasota Police Sergeant Mark Butler Dies in Heroic Action

The city of Navasota is reeling from the tragic loss of Police Sergeant Mark Butler, who lost his life in a heroic effort while pursuing a forgery suspect on February 5. It was an ordinary Wednesday that quickly turned into a heart-wrenching tale of bravery and sacrifice.

A Chase Unfolds

The day started off normal, but by 2:30 p.m., the Navasota Police Department found themselves in a high-speed chase alongside the College Station Police. The suspect, a 24-year-old man from Bryan named Logan Jeffrey Young, was wanted due to a blue warrant for a parole violation. As officers pursued Young, they managed to spike the tires of his vehicle on Texas Highway 6 south, just south of FM 3090. However, the chase took a tragic turn just past the Texas 105 exit when the situation escalated.

The Incident at Prosperity Bank

This wild pursuit started when officers were called to a Prosperity Bank just after 3 p.m. They confronted a woman trying to cash a fraudulent check, and when she spotted the officers, she fled the scene in a sleek black 2023 Jeep Wrangler. The suspect took off southbound on Highway 6, made a quick exit at FM 2154, and recklessly entered the northbound lanes. What happened next changed everything.

A Collision of Fate

Shortly after 3:30 p.m., the fleeing Jeep collided head-on with Sergeant Butler’s marked Chevrolet Tahoe. This devastating accident occurred on the northbound lanes of Highway 6 near FM 3090. While Sergeant Butler was immediately rushed to CHI St. Joseph Hospital – Grimes Hospital, he was sadly pronounced dead upon arrival. The female suspect was also pronounced dead at the scene, although her identity has not been disclosed as authorities await family notifications.

A Hero Remembered

The news of Sergeant Butler’s passing sent shockwaves through the Navasota community. Community members have expressed overwhelming grief, paying tribute to him as a true hero. Many witnesses of the crash have recounted how Butler courageously stepped in to prevent the fleeing Jeep from striking other vehicles.
