College Station, Texas – Texas A&M University is making notable strides in artificial intelligence (AI) and energy research, highlighted by recent accolades and collaborative initiatives that promise to enhance educational resources and research capabilities both locally and nationally.

Dr. Daniel Tabor, an assistant professor of chemistry at Texas A&M, has been awarded the prestigious 2025 JPC C Lectureship Award by the American Chemical Society (ACS) for his pioneering work in utilizing AI for materials discovery in energy and electronics. This award recognizes Tabor’s innovative approach to bridging theoretical and practical sciences, showcasing the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration. His research team has achieved significant advancements in areas such as energy storage, organic electronics, and spectroscopy.

The award ceremony and Tabor’s research lecture are scheduled to take place at the ACS Fall 2025 Meetings & Expo in Washington, D.C. from August 17–21. The Journal of Physical Chemistry C sponsors the 2025JPC C Lectureship Award, emphasizing ground-breaking research in the fields of energy, materials, and catalysis.

In addition to Tabor’s recognition, Texas A&M’s Mays Business School has entered a partnership with the AI search engine Perplexity to bolster resources for students in managing their coursework. Mays students now have the ability to log in with their Texas A&M credentials to access Perplexity’s Enterprise Pro features, which have been specifically designed for business research and analysis. According to the assistant dean for artificial intelligence, the university is positioning itself as a leader in AI education through this collaborative effort.

Texas A&M is also actively developing guidelines regarding the ethical use of AI tools across various courses, recognizing that acceptance may vary among different classes. To further integrate AI into the curriculum, Mays Business School plans to launch a new Artificial Intelligence and Business minor for juniors and seniors in Fall 2025, comprising 15 credit hours distributed over 8-week online courses. The expansion of this minor is expected to eventually include all Mays students and eventually extend to the entire Texas A&M student body.

To stimulate interest in AI applications among students, two competitions have been introduced: an undergraduate business plan competition and a dissertation proposal competition, both sponsored by the Deloitte Foundation. However, the introduction of AI has brought mixed reactions; some students are concerned that heavy reliance on AI may impede learning and critical thinking skills, while others see potential benefits, including improved information organization and new insights.

In a broader effort to enhance generative AI education, OpenAI recently announced a $50 million investment in Texas through the NextGenAI consortium, with Texas A&M selected as one of 15 participating institutions. This investment aims to empower the academic community—students and researchers alike—with advanced AI skills and knowledge.

Texas A&M is also engaged in initiatives related to energy production, specifically through a project known as The Energy Proving Ground. This project focuses on the development of small modular reactors (SMRs) in collaboration with four reactor manufacturers. The site located in Bryan, Texas, is designed to accommodate multiple SMRs capable of generating over one gigawatt of power. This initiative aims to support advanced nuclear technology and initiatives, further solidifying Texas’s position as a leader in energy production.

As Texas A&M University continues to forge ahead in AI and energy research, the achievements of its faculty and the collaborative efforts across disciplines signal a promising future for education and innovation in these critical fields.
