Texas Oil & Gas Industry Achieves New Milestones

Texas Oil and Gas Production

News Summary

The Texas oil and gas industry is experiencing remarkable growth as recent reports indicate record-breaking natural gas production and steady crude oil output. With a significant increase in energy exports, Texas solidifies its position as a vital player in the global energy market. The state contributes over 40% of U.S. crude oil production and nearly 30% of marketed natural gas. This article discusses the industry’s role in meeting both domestic and international demands while highlighting the importance of infrastructure investments for continued success.

Texas reported record-setting natural gas production figures and steady oil output for May 2025, according to the latest Monthly Energy Economics Review released by the Texas Oil & Gas Association (TXOGA). The data highlights Texas’ pivotal role in supplying energy to not only the United States but also international markets.

The report indicates that Texas’ crude oil production held steady at 5.7 million barrels per day (mb/d) during May 2025, demonstrating the state’s stable contribution to the oil industry. Meanwhile, natural gas gross withdrawals soared to 36.9 billion cubic feet per day (bcf/d), with marketed production reaching an unprecedented level of 34.4 bcf/d. In addition, the state experienced strong production in natural gas liquids (NGLs), contributing 4.0 mb/d.

Todd Staples, the TXOGA President, emphasized that Texas continues to exemplify energy leadership, a sentiment supported by the significant production increases. Dean Foreman, TXOGA Chief Economist, pointed out the growth in natural gas production as critical not just for domestic energy supply but also in fulfilling global requirements.

From January to May 2025, Texas accounted for 42.2% of the total U.S. crude oil production, as well as 29.2% of the country’s marketed natural gas production. This extensive contribution underscores the state’s dominance in the energy sector.

The export figures from March 2025 provide further insight into Texas’ role in the global energy market, as the state exported $19.8 billion in energy products, reflecting a 2.6% year-over-year increase. Notably, crude oil exports contributed $8.8 billion, while refined products accounted for $5.5 billion. Additionally, hydrocarbon gas liquids were valued at $2.9 billion, and natural gas exports (including LNG and pipeline) reached $2.6 billion.

In March, Texas produced an average of 27.7 billion cubic feet per day of dry natural gas, with significant consumption and export levels: 11.8 billion cubic feet consumed in-state and 12.5 billion cubic feet exported via pipeline and LNG to various markets, including Mexico.

Notably, Europe received 61% of Texas’ LNG exports and 40% of crude oil exports. The Asia Pacific region was also a major recipient, taking 57% of Texas’ hydrocarbon gas liquids and 43% of crude oil exports, showcasing the diverse global demand for Texan energy products.

The report emphasizes the importance of market access and ongoing investments in infrastructure, which are crucial for delivering these record production volumes to both domestic consumers and export markets. Such developments are vital for maintaining Texas’ position as a leading energy supplier on the global stage.

The Texas Oil & Gas Association utilizes data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) and the U.S. International Trade Commission (USITC) to compile its report and provide accurate insights into the energy sector. This robust data solidifies Texas’ reputation as a credible source for business and economic trends in the energy industry.

Overall, the strength of Texas’ oil and gas sector plays a pivotal role in providing dependable energy solutions for families, communities, and trading partners, both domestically and internationally, cementing the state’s status as a cornerstone in the global energy landscape.
