BRYAN, Texas — Voters in the Bryan and College Station area who planned to cast ballots Tuesday at College Heights Assembly of God in Bryan will need to go somewhere else, because Brazos County has pulled the church from its Election Day lineup with only days to go before the Nov. 3 midterm election.
The church sits at 4100 Old College Road. Church leaders told the county election office that the building has a failed air conditioning system and could lose water service.
County officials weighed bringing in portable cooling units but turned that down. The building is older, and they worried the extra load on top of the power drawn by voting equipment could knock out electricity while people were voting.
Brazos County lets residents vote at any of its polling sites on Election Day, so the closure does not take anyone off the rolls or tie them to one spot. The nearest fallback for voters who live near the church is Legends Event Center, which sits on Midtown Park Blvd. at No. 2533, a bit under two miles away.
In a written statement, county officials said that even a small chance of the power failing was more than they would accept with people in the middle of voting. The call followed the report from church leaders about the cooling and water problems.
Polls across Texas are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Election Day, and anyone in line by closing time can still vote. Voters should bring an accepted photo ID.
The full list of Tuesday locations is posted on the county elections website at elections.brazoscountytx.gov.
