College Station City Council Approves Negotiations to Relocate Brazos Valley Bombers to Veterans Park

The College Station City Council has announced plans to enter negotiations with the Brazos Valley Bombers regarding the potential relocation of the baseball team to College Station. This decision was made during a council meeting held on Thursday, as the city aims to enhance its sports tourism industry and provide state-of-the-art facilities for the community.

Mayor John Nichols confirmed that city staff has been directed to prepare a letter of intent to lease or occupy space in College Station for the Bombers. The team could potentially move to one of three new baseball fields that are planned for construction at Veterans Park, designed to accommodate a variety of sports events.

Details on the Planned Facilities

The design process for the new baseball fields is set to begin in 2024, following the council’s decision to contract Pendulum Studio for the project. Current plans indicate that the park will feature three baseball fields, including one specially designated as a ‘championship field’. This field is expected to have amenities typically associated with larger ballparks, enhancing both player and spectator experiences.

As part of the planning process, the Bombers will be actively involved to ensure that their organizational needs are fully met in the design. To facilitate this, the council voted in April to create an eight-member Baseball Design Committee that will oversee the project. The appointees for this committee are still pending.

Future Plans and Community Impact

The Bombers are expected to play their 2025 season at their current home, Travis Field in Bryan, while also exploring a potential rental agreement with the City of Bryan for the 2026 season. Meanwhile, construction of the new fields at Veterans Park is projected to be completed by the 2027 season, depending on ongoing negotiations between the Bombers and College Station officials.

The next phase involves entering an economic development agreement to address specifics related to economic incentives and field usage. Mayor Nichols emphasized the commitment to ensure that the new baseball complex serves the broader community effectively as a versatile venue for various events.

Background and Additional Context

This move towards establishing a new baseball facility follows a recent decision by the Bryan City Council to reject proposals aimed at modernizing Travis Field. This rejection has led the Bombers to seek long-term stability in their operations, prompting discussions about potential relocation. The Bombers organization has been an integral part of the local community for 18 seasons, and co-owner Uri Geva has expressed gratitude to the City of Bryan while also emphasizing the necessity for a sustainable future for the team.

Mayor Nichols has conveyed optimism about developing a comprehensive baseball facility at Veterans Park, one that not only accommodates the Bombers but also caters to various age groups and events. The planned championship field is set to include additional facilities such as clubhouses, locker rooms, training areas, batting and pitching buildings, and a press box. These enhancements are aimed at attracting more tournaments, and ultimately improving the overall experience for both fans and players alike.
