College Station city officials are managing over 50 active capital improvement projects focusing on road work, parks, and public safety enhancements. Notable developments include the widening of Rock Prairie Road and the construction of Fire Station No. 7. Additional projects involve upgrades to local parks and amenities aimed at improving community service levels. The city also faces a reduction in water export permits as part of a settlement, while crime has seen recent arrests in burglary cases. The Fluor Corporation is contracted for a major highway project expected to start soon.

College Station city officials are currently overseeing more than 50 active capital improvement projects as of this summer. This significant update was shared during a City Council meeting addressed by the director of capital projects and facility management, Jennifer Cain. The projects span various sectors, including road work, parks funded by bonds, and enhancements to public safety infrastructure.

One of the most notable initiatives, the widening of Rock Prairie Road, is currently underway. This project extends from State Highway 6 to William D. Fitch Parkway. The first phase, which involves widening the road from SH 6 to Town Lake, is anticipated to be completed by September. The second phase, extending from Town Lake to W.D. Fitch Parkway, is projected to take until late 2028 to finish, subject to land acquisition and utility coordination.

In addition to road improvements, construction is progressing on Fire Station No. 7, located near Arrington and Dalton Drive. Utility trenching has been completed, and the site has been cleared for the building’s construction. Fire Station No. 7 is expected to open in the fall of 2026.

The Brian Bachmann Park is nearing completion of new buildings designated for senior and Little League teams; these facilities are about 85% finished and expected to be completed by August. Additionally, Texas Independence Park is in development on a 68-acre site featuring multiple planned amenities, including trails, a bike track, a dog park, disc golf areas, a fishing pond, and new restroom facilities. The total cost for the park could reach $20 million, with $9.2 million already secured in funding.

College Station leaders are also designing three new baseball fields at the Veterans Park and Athletic Complex. These will include a championship field equipped with shaded seating, restrooms, and locker rooms. A steering committee consisting of representatives from College Station ISD, College Station Little League, and other community organizations is tasked with finalizing the layout for the baseball fields.

As part of the November 2022 bond issue, the city council has awarded several construction contracts. This includes funding of $1.1 million designated for replacing tennis courts at Bee Creek and Central Parks, along with a $4 million contract for new parks department operations buildings at Central Park, which was nearly $3 million under budget. Additionally, over $3.5 million has been allocated for upgrades to the Carters Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant.

Enhancements for Wolf Pen Creek Park are also in the conceptual stages, with proposed features like amphitheater seating, food truck areas, and a splash pad. However, the costs and funding sources are still to be determined.

In a related situation, College Station has reached a settlement that will reduce water export permits from Brazos and Robertson counties from 100,000 acre-feet per year to 50,000 acre-feet per year, with the reduction phased over 14 years.

In local crime news, the College Station police arrested a woman for burglary of habitation and child endangerment after her children were discovered unattended in a running vehicle. Another arrest was made at a local Target for vehicle burglary, which connected the suspect to prior charges, totaling 15 arrests in nine years.

Finally, the Fluor Corporation has been contracted for a $671 million project aimed at widening a 12-mile segment of State Highway 6. Construction is set to begin in Summer 2025, with completion expected by Spring 2030.
