College Station, Texas – Texas A&M Track and Field Expands Scholarship Opportunities Following NCAA House Settlement

Texas A&M University’s track and field program is set to significantly expand its scholarship offerings for both men’s and women’s teams. Following a recent NCAA House settlement, the program will now provide full scholarships for all athletes starting with the 2026 outdoor title defense. This decision is expected to greatly enhance recruitment and retention efforts within the highly competitive track and field community.

Texas A&M track and field coach Pat Henry, who has led the team to 25 outdoor national championships throughout his coaching career, expressed his excitement over the new changes. Previously, he managed to allocate only 12.6 scholarships among 52 male athletes and 18 scholarships for 55 female athletes. The recent developments will provide the entire roster with a full scholarship, a significant increase from the limited funds available in prior seasons.

In the 2023-24 athletic season, Texas A&M allocated $632,601 for 12.47 scholarships for 45 male athletes and $894,136 for 17.46 scholarships for 41 female athletes. The NCAA’s new ruling allows outdoor track programs to have 45 full or partial scholarships available per gender, matching the current roster limits. Although the new settlement also opens avenues for universities to create revenue-sharing agreements, Texas A&M’s track program will not benefit from this provision.

The university’s athletic director announced that starting July 1, six other programs at A&M will receive revenue sharing. These typically include sports with higher earning potential, such as football, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, and softball. The football program alone generated substantial profits amounting to $118.5 million, while men’s basketball contributed $12.2 million. In contrast, the track teams faced deficits, with men’s track reporting a loss of $3.4 million, and women’s track seeing a deficiency of $3.6 million.

As part of broader efforts to enhance its athletic programs, Texas A&M plans to add around 200 more scholarships across all athletic sectors by the 2025-26 year, a shift aimed at improving recruiting and strengthening the overall competitiveness of the university in collegiate sports.

While other sports, such as soccer, will not qualify for revenue sharing, they will still offer full scholarships for their complete rosters of 28 athletes. Coach Henry has acknowledged that many schools might struggle with financial capabilities regarding full scholarships for Olympic sports, which could create challenges in recruitment and gaining a competitive edge. He remains optimistic about the university’s support and the potential to increase fan attendance, which could strengthen the argument for revenue sharing moving forward.

This development comes at a time when the dynamics of collegiate athletics and scholarship distributions are under significant examination, making ways for newly expanded opportunities for student-athletes. Coaches and administrators across various programs are now focused on implementing these changes to fuel both athletic and academic success for their athletes.
