Bryan-College Station, Texas – The Texas Tech women’s track and field team made significant strides at the NCAA West First Round Championships, held at E.B. Cushing Stadium. Several athletes achieved personal bests and qualified for national championships, displaying the team’s strength in various events.
Highlighting the competition, Victoria Gorlova secured a second-place finish in the women’s triple jump with a personal best of 13.99 meters (45 feet 10 ¾ inches), marking her as the third best in Texas Tech history. Fellow athlete Tamiah Washington, who was the NCAA indoor national runner-up, finished sixth in the triple jump, leaping 13.54 meters (44 feet 5 ½ inches) and advancing to the top twelve on her final attempt.
In the discus throw event, both Shelby Frank and Zoe Burleson performed admirably, qualifying for the next round. Frank threw a distance of 61.23 meters (200 feet 10 inches), taking second place, while Burleson finished eighth with a throw of 55.47 meters (182 feet 10 inches).
Temitope Adeshina showcased her talents in the high jump, tying for first place by clearing 1.84 meters (6 feet ½ inch). This outstanding performance ensured her return to Eugene for the national championships, having placed third in the previous year’s competition. Additional athletes advancing from Texas Tech include Destiny Smith and Tonie-Ann Forbes, both of whom progressed in the 100-meter hurdles, with Smith recording a personal best time of 13.01 seconds and Forbes finishing closely behind at 13.11 seconds.
In the 800-meter race, Fanny Arendt excelled, winning her heat with a time of 2:02.63 and finishing ninth overall in the competition. The Red Raiders will take a week off before competing at the national championships in Eugene, Oregon, from June 11 to 14.
Meanwhile, in a strong showing for the Texas Tech softball team, they triumphed over UCLA with a score of 3-1, advancing within one win of entering the championship series during the Women’s College World Series semifinals. Hailey Toney played a crucial role by hitting a go-ahead two-out home run in the sixth inning, marking her seventh home run of the season.
The team’s initial run came from a crafty double steal play in the fifth inning, which saw Makayla Garcia scoring from third base. Raegan Jennings added an insurance run in the seventh inning with a pinch-hit RBI single, further solidifying the lead. Despite UCLA’s Kaniya Bragg tying the game with a solo home run in the fifth inning, Texas Tech quickly regained the lead, maintaining their impressive streak of scoring first in the last 22 consecutive games, the longest active streak in Division I softball.
Texas Tech’s current season record stands at 52 wins and 12 losses. They are set to play against the winner of the elimination game between Oklahoma and Oregon on Monday, June 2, at 6 p.m. on ESPN, with hopes of advancing further in the championship chase.
