COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Texas A&M volleyball swept the Southeastern Conference’s weekly player awards Monday, a nice reward for the College Station program after a strong road trip. Senior outside hitter Kyndal Stowers was named co-offensive player of the week, and junior middle blocker Eliza Sharp took the defensive award.
The No. 19 Aggies won at Georgia in four sets on Friday and then swept No. 4 Kentucky on Sunday, ending the Wildcats’ 30-match winning streak at home. It was A&M’s second win this season over a team ranked in the top five, and it stretched the Aggies’ run to three straight wins and a 6-3 mark in league play.
Stowers, a Denton, Texas, native, posted double-doubles in both matches. At Georgia she had 14 kills and 16 digs, tying her career best in digs, and added two blocks and two aces. At Kentucky she put down 16 kills in three sets with 10 digs. She averaged 4.29 kills per set for the weekend, and the award is her second of the season. Her streak of straight double-doubles now stands at five.
Sharp, from Burlingame, Calif., earned her first career SEC weekly honor. She finished with 11 blocks across seven sets, starting with four at Georgia along with six kills. Against Kentucky she logged seven blocks, her high for a league match.
Texas A&M returns to Reed Arena on Friday to host Tennessee at 6:30 p.m. and then visits rival Texas on Sunday. The two honors reflect a weekend in which the Aggies controlled both sides of the net, with Stowers driving the attack and Sharp anchoring the block against two of the league’s better teams. Both players now carry that momentum into a home match before the trip to Austin.
