COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Tyler White, the punter for the Texas A&M team based here in College Station, picked up another national nod on Monday, landing on the Ray Guy Award’s weekly Ray’s 8 list for Week 8.
The award committee and the Augusta Sports Council, which runs the honor, released the list. It is the third time this fall White has made the list, after he was also picked for Week 2 and Week 4. He has already been named Ray Guy Punter of the Week once and opened the year on the award’s preseason watch list.
White earned the latest honor in a loss. Alabama, ranked No. 13, beat the Aggies 31-20 on Saturday, but White kept the Crimson Tide backed up much of the afternoon. He punted four times for a 47.2-yard average, boomed one kick 59 yards and dropped another inside the Alabama 20.
His season numbers stand out across the league. White has sent 17 of his 29 punts beyond 50 yards and leads the SEC at 49.4 yards per punt.
Field position has mattered for an Aggies offense that has had trouble moving the ball this season. In the Alabama game, freshman running back KJ Edwards gave the offense a lift with 43 yards on eight carries before an injury limited his snaps.
Edwards, a freshman from Carthage, Texas, was making his third start of the year and played a season-high 29 snaps, getting the call ahead of veteran Rueben Owens II and second-year back Jamarion Morrow. His 5.4 yards per carry gave the Aggies one of their few steady weapons on a day when points were hard to find.
Wins have been scarce for A&M this fall, which makes steady contributions from a veteran specialist like White and a first-year back like Edwards stand out even more for Aggie fans.
The Ray Guy Award goes each year to the top punter in college football.
