BRYAN, Texas — Officers in Bryan, College Station and across Brazos County will be skipping the razor this winter for a cause. Four local law enforcement agencies are joining a fundraiser for childhood brain cancer research that runs from Nov. 1 through Jan. 6, 2027.

Bryan Police, College Station Police, the Brazos County Sheriff’s Office and the Texas A&M University Police Department have signed up for the Beard It Up campaign and its companion, Color for the Cure. Every dollar goes to the Central Texas chapter of The Cure Starts Now, a nonprofit that pays for pediatric brain cancer research.

Officers make a donation for permission to grow a beard or goatee while on duty. At some departments, women officers can donate to paint their nails in a color tied to a cancer that has touched their lives. Civilian staff can pay to dress down in jeans or a favorite team shirt.

Vicky and Troy Bridier started the Central Texas chapter in September 2016 after losing their daughter Jade at age 4 to diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma, or DIPG, a brain tumor that is always fatal. In the last half-decade, the disease has taken a child under 10 from three different Texas police families.

When the effort launched in 2018, no police agency anywhere had joined before the Brazos County departments did. Since then, more than 120 agencies in 24 states have joined, bringing in over $830,000. The foundation says its national total for pediatric brain cancer studies has reached $44.3 million, spread over more than 100 hospitals, Texas Children’s Hospital among them.

Police, fire and EMS departments are invited to form their own teams, and members of the public can give online.
