COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Texas A&M senior Aaron Pounds of the College Station campus picked up the SEC’s weekly men’s golf award on Wednesday, Oct. 28, after taking the individual crown at the Abilene Christian Intercollegiate.
Pounds finished the 54-hole event at 8-under-par 208 on a par-72 layout. He opened at 3-under to sit tied for second, moved into first with a 4-under second round and then closed at 1-under to stay on top. His win also helped the Aggies take their first team title of the fall.
It is the third individual title of his college career, and the first he has won outright; his earlier two came in ties for first. This is also his third time earning the weekly SEC award, and his first this season.
In the field of 48 players, Pounds was one of only two to post a pair of rounds in the 60s, and one of just 14 to finish under par. He made 11 birdies and added an eagle, his first this fall, on the 617-yard seventh, a par 5, during the second round.
Pounds, from The Woodlands, is the second Aggie to collect the weekly honor this fall. Junior Wheaton Ennis received it on Oct. 7.
The Aggies finish fall play at Loxley, Ala., where the Steelwood Collegiate Invitational runs from Saturday, Oct. 31, through Sunday, Nov. 1. The Aggies are the defending champions there after shooting 10-under as a team last year, when Pounds tied for fourth. The Steelwood event is the last stop before the team breaks until the spring portion of its schedule, and it gives Pounds a chance to build on the hot finish to his fall at a course where he played well a year ago.
