A 21-gun salute at the Museum of the American G.I. on Memorial Day

News Summary

The Museum of the American G.I. in College Station is hosting its annual ‘Remembering the Fallen’ event on Memorial Day, featuring a 21-gun salute with historic cannons. The museum will also observe the 81st Anniversary of D-Day with family-friendly activities. Additionally, the community can participate in a Memorial Day event at the Never Forget Garden, featuring a patriotic program. As the weekend approaches, residents are reminded of the Real ID deadline and retailers are offering Memorial Day sales.

College Station – The Museum of the American G.I. is hosting a “Remembering the Fallen” event on Memorial Day, May 25, starting at 3 p.m. This significant occasion will include a 21-gun salute featuring three historic cannons representing various wars: a French 75 mm field gun for World War I, a 75 mm pack Howitzer for World War II, and a 105 mm Howitzer for the Vietnam War. The salute will take place outdoors and is free for all attendees.

The museum will open its doors to the public both before and after the event, allowing visitors to explore the rich history of the American G.I. Following the Memorial Day celebration, the museum will also observe the 81st Anniversary of D-Day on Saturday, June 7, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. This event will offer insights into the experiences of soldiers during the Battle of Normandy, showcasing uniforms, weapons, and equipment from the era.

The D-Day event is designed to be family-friendly, featuring hands-on activities that will engage children of all ages. The Museum of the American G.I. is located at 19124 Highway 6 South in College Station and is recognized as a Blue Star Museum, offering free admission to Active Duty military members and their families from Armed Forces Day, May 17, through Labor Day, September 1.

In addition to the events at the Museum of the American G.I., the Never Forget Garden in Veteran’s Park will host another Memorial Day event on Monday at 11 a.m. This community gathering will feature a patriotic program with veteran speakers and the ceremonial placement of wreaths. Refreshments and games will be offered afterwards, with attendees advised to enter from the Harvey Road entrance.

As Memorial Day weekend approaches, Texas residents are reminded of the impending Real ID deadline, with enforcement scheduled to begin on May 7. A Real ID can be identified by a gold star located in the upper right-hand corner of a driver’s license. Travelers are encouraged to secure appointments to update their identification, as many destinations will require a Real ID for summer travel.

In local news, a recent three-vehicle crash in College Station resulted in the tragic death of 80-year-old Margie Berry Smith and left several others injured. The police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

As the holiday weekend approaches, many retailers are also set to offer significant discounts as part of their Memorial Day sales, providing opportunities for residents to find great deals while commemorating the sacrifices of service members.
